In Belgium, EGR valves clog quickly due to short urban trips (Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent). The engine doesn't reach optimal temperature, exhaust gases contain more soot, and this soot sticks to the valve and intake manifold. Result: valve gradually blocks open or closed.
The EGR valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) recirculates a portion of exhaust gases back into the intake to lower combustion temperature and NOx emissions. On modern diesels, it's essential for compliance with Euro emissions standards.
Unstable idle, black smoke on acceleration, engine warning light, fault codes P0401 (insufficient flow) or P0402 (excessive flow), reduced power, increased fuel consumption. Often combined with DPF issues.
